Task Lighting for the Kitchen

Working in the kitchen can be a joy with the correct lighting.  Each area in the kitchen may call for a different type of lighting, and a lighting designer could be a big help assisting in the design process.

When you are preparing food on the counter near the sink, it can be helpful to have a recessed light over the sink and under counter lights for the best vision.  The recessed lighting will give good general lighting, but the under counter lighting will eliminate shadows so you can see what you are slicing.  The recessed light should have a dimmer to give you control of the level of light depending on the task at hand.

The island or peninsula could have either recessed or pendant lights.  The recessed light might provide more light, but don’t forget the dimmer for an atmosphere options when you have company.

The pendant lights can be more glamorous and provide a great decorative flair.  They might not give as much light, especially if you are in need of bright task lighting.

The options in lighting today can not only provide safe lighting for food preparation, but also for atmosphere.  Consider rope lighting above the cabinets for a unique effect.  A visit to your favorite lighting store can bring a wealth of information.  My favorite store is the Lighting Showcase on Rt. 9 in Shrewsbury, MA.  Tell Al and Juliana you were referred by Evergreen Realty.
