It is a Sterling Thing

We heard that Hurricane Irene was coming days before it arrived, and we heard it could be the storm of the century.  It did dominate the news, perhaps because not much else was happening.  Everyone had plenty of time to prepare this event with flashlights, batteries, water, lots of extra food.

Hurricane Irene did come roaring through Sterling on Sunday and certainly left some damage.  There were some trees down, and we did loose electricity for a short while, but we really escaped the worst of it.

After the ice storm of 2008, Sterling residents can take most anything.  We also learned during the cold days and nights of no power that electricity is a very important feature in our lives, and we really miss it when there is an interruption.

I lived in Norwood for many years, and today I read an article in the Norwood Patch, called “It is a Norwood Thing.”  Norwood has its own municipal light company, and it reminded me of how truly lucky we are to have our own Sterling Municipal Light Company.

A number of years ago the town considered selling our municipal light company to National Grid, so I don’t have to tell you how long we might have waited for those folks to take care of us.

We need to honor our own local police, firemen, and Municipal Light Company workers, who stand ready to take care of our town under all emergency situations.  Next week the Light Company will string lights and provide electricity to make our Sterling Fair a reality.  It is a “Sterling Thing” to be able to count on our local people under all situations, and we are a very lucky to have them.

Davis Farmland is Celebrating a Birthday

Petting Zoo

Davis Farmland

Davis Farm on Redstone Hill in Sterling MA is celebrating a birthday this weekend.  The Davis family has been farming this land for 165 years and  during the weekend of August 20 and 21, there will be special events at Davis Farmland, which is a children’s discovery park petting zoo, and children’s water park.

The Davis Farm began as a dairy farm in 1846, and seven generations have been actively farming this land.  More recently the family created a very special place for families to bring their children to see what farm animals are all about.   The original Petting Zoo offered young children a chance to pet the baby goats, see the chickens lay eggs, ride the ponies, and enjoy the most exciting children’s play ground ever.   My granddaughter and her friend were able to watch twin baby goats being born and the “farm hands” let them name the babies.  It was very exciting for her.

Baby Goats

Over time the farm has expanded to include the water park and mega maze, and families come from near and far to enjoy the “Farmland experience”.  This weekend will bring special events.  Don’t miss the chance to share this time with your family, and your children will thank you.

Design Tips for Homeowners on a Budget

Having your home look like a million bucks doesn’t have to cost you big. Following a few simple design tips and researching the latest styles can help you can transform your dull space into divine living.

The first rule of budget design is to have a clear focus. Work on one room and one design at a time. The reasoning behind this is simple. It’s too easy to go over budget if you are shopping for multiple projects at the same time. By focusing on one room, you can be clear on what items you really need.

To know what items you need, come up with a design plan. You might have a great design mind and can plan a room from scratch, but most of us need guidance. Where are good places to get inspiration?

  • Friends and family who have enlisted the help of professional decorators in the past may have rooms you’d like to emulate. Take tips from their rooms, but personalize them to your taste. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
  • Design magazines show you a range of styles. Pick an inspiration room and copy it.
  • Furniture showrooms have really stepped up their game in the past few years. They can be full of great new ideas for color schemes, bedding, and more!
  • Celebrities can afford to pay top dollar for the industry’s leading interior designers. A simple online image search will show you top celebrity homes that have been featured in magazines.

Now that you’re inspired, develop a solid design plan. In a notebook or on your computer, draw out your future room. Choose colors and patterns. The clearer the design in your head, the more closely you’ll be able to create it. Use this drawing to create a shopping list of items.

Don’t do any shopping, though, until you calculate a budget. How much can you afford to spend? Even $100 can make a huge difference in a room. New paint, throw pillows, and curtains can be inexpensive changes, especially if you know the tricks of budget shopping.

Budget design means going outside of retail shopping. Garage and estate sales can be wonderful shopping grounds, especially if you already have an idea of what you need. However, don’t compromise style for cost. The last thing you want to do is spend money on something that doesn’t’ really work.

Clearance is your best friend. Shop sales, use coupons, and always take a look at clearance racks. Don’t forget about online clearance as well. Many stores have fabulous deals and minimal shipping costs.

You can do anything you set your mind to. A great way to save money is to do projects yourself. An upholstered headboard, for example, can cost upwards of $500, but building one yourself can cost less than $100. Headboards, shelving, pillows, and artwork are all within the reach of any amateur. YouTube is a wonderful resource for how-to videos. Plus, it’s free!

Another money saving tip is to use faux instead of luxury goods. This means faux silk curtains instead of real silk. Choose laminate floors over hardwoods. Use faux fur instead of real fur, which looks just as great and is also cruelty free.

Finally, reuse what you already have. You may have items in others areas of your home that will now work for your newly designed space.

The key to budget designing is to have a clear plan and to stick to you. Do this and you’re sure to have a room of which you’re proud.

Tips and Tricks about Landscaping for Curb Appeal

A well-landscaped yard creates curb appeal and helps your property retain maximum value. Here are a few tips and tricks for sprucing up your outdoor spaces yourself.

A beautiful yard is a head-turner, no doubt about it. The good news is that even if you can’t tell a tulip from a turnip at the garden center, you can still create eye-catching curb appeal by paying attention to the basics of good landscaping.  Ignoring your yard—or doing something that’s out of character with the neighborhood—can jeopardize the assessed value of your home.

Poorly maintained landscaping can be as much as a 5 or 10% deduction.”  Appraisers are quick to praise the allure of a well-tended lawn and good-looking landscaping when it comes time to sell your home, but most do not assign any specific increase in monetary value for upkeep.

Although landscaping will add to the appeal of the property and it may sell quicker, it’s hard to quantify specific value.   Nevertheless, most professionals agree that curb appeal and a well-maintained appearance prevent your property from losing value. Here are some suggestions for boosting the curb appeal of your yard:

Green up the grass

If your house has a front yard, make sure it‘s neat and green.  You don’t want bare spots, sprawling weeds, or an untrimmed appearance.

“It’s so simple to go to Home Depot, buy fertilizer, apply it every six weeks, and water it,” says Mitch Kalamian, a landscape designer in Huntinginton Beach, Calif. “It will green up.”

If the yard looks really scruffy, you may decide to invest in some sod. According to the National Gardening Association, the average cost of sod is 15 to 35 cents per sq. ft. If you hire a landscaper to sod your yard for you, labor will add 30% to 50% to the total cost of the project.

Another alternative is to plant low-maintenance turf grasses.  Turf grasses are durable and drought-resistant. Expect to pay $18 to $30 for enough turf grass seed to plant 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn area.

Add colorful planting beds

Flower beds add color and help enliven otherwise plain areas, such as along driveways and the edges of walkways. In general, annual flowers are a bit cheaper but must be replaced every year. Perennials cost a bit more but come back annually and usually get larger or spread with each growing season.

If you’re not sure what to plant, inquire at your local garden center. Often, they’ll have a display of bedding plants chosen for their adaptability to your area. Also, they‘ll be inexpensive because they’re in season, says Peter Mezitt, president of Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, Mass. Try pansies in the summer, and asters and mums in the fall to add vibrant color. “That’s what we do around the entrance to our garden center,” Mezitt says.

Add landscape lighting

For homeowners who have made a sizeable investment in landscaping, it makes sense to think about adding another 10% to 15% to the bill for professional lighting.  “You can’t see landscaping after dark,“ says Brandon Stephens, vice president of marketing for a landscape lighting firm in Lubbock, Texas, “and buyers are not always looking at houses on a Saturday afternoon.”

The cost of a system runs from $200 for a DIY installation to more than $4,000 for a professional job. If you‘re doing it on your own, the key is to light what you want people to see, such as mature trees and flowering shrubs

Plant a tree

The value of mature trees is particularly difficult to determine. Lucco says that in his market, mature trees contribute as much as 10% of a $100,000 property’s overall value. In addition, a properly placed shade tree can shave as much as $32 a year on your energy bills. Expect to pay $50 to $100 for a young, 6- to 7-foot deciduous tree.

Many people are spending more time in the home and yard, and the time enhancing the landscaping will be repaid not only with the great curb appeal that results in a higher sale price, but also personal enjoyment in this beautiful environment.

Sonoma Restaurant of Princeton is a Local Treasure

Sonoma of Princeton MAChef and Owner Bill Brady has graced Central Massachusetts with an outstanding Five Star restaurant in the small town of Princeton.  The quality of Chef Bill’s food and the creativity of his presentation makes Sonoma a very special destination.

Bill provides his loyal customers a special treat.  In May he offered exceptional wine pairings every Tuesday for the month.  We celebrated my brother’s birthday on the first night.  Bill explained in detail the amazing food he had prepared and why he paired the special wines with each course.  The menu follows.

First Course:

Roast Beet and Goat Cheese Gateau (Julienne Vegetables, Beet and Champagne Vinaigrette) and the wine was a 2006 Bodega del Desierto Sauvignon Blanc, Argentina

Second Course:

Crab and Smoked Swiss Bisque (Served with a Crab Fritter and Toasted Sage Butter) and the wine was 2006 Rene Barbier Chardonnay, PenedesSONOMA'S BEEF

Third Course:

Braised Short Rib of Beef (Roasted Tomato Polenta and Spring Ramps) and the wine was 2004 Roshambo Syrah, Sonoma County

Final Course:

Sweet Endings and Pomagranite Splash

The dinner was amazing, and the service was impeccable.  My brother travels from Martha’s Vineyard to come to the wine pairings because the events are outstanding.  We only wish they did not book up so fast, because we would come every week.

Every visit to Sonoma is an outstanding experience, and it is no wonder the well-known  Phantom Gourmet  food critics are  full of praise for this special restaurant.  The wine selection is one of the most extensive in all of Central Massachusetts and each wine is carefully selected by Bill.  When you are looking for an elegant place for dinner and an extraordinary dining experience,  put Sonoma on the top of your list.  You won’t be disappointed

Task Lighting for the Kitchen

Working in the kitchen can be a joy with the correct lighting.  Each area in the kitchen may call for a different type of lighting, and a lighting designer could be a big help assisting in the design process.

When you are preparing food on the counter near the sink, it can be helpful to have a recessed light over the sink and under counter lights for the best vision.  The recessed lighting will give good general lighting, but the under counter lighting will eliminate shadows so you can see what you are slicing.  The recessed light should have a dimmer to give you control of the level of light depending on the task at hand.

The island or peninsula could have either recessed or pendant lights.  The recessed light might provide more light, but don’t forget the dimmer for an atmosphere options when you have company.

The pendant lights can be more glamorous and provide a great decorative flair.  They might not give as much light, especially if you are in need of bright task lighting.

The options in lighting today can not only provide safe lighting for food preparation, but also for atmosphere.  Consider rope lighting above the cabinets for a unique effect.  A visit to your favorite lighting store can bring a wealth of information.  My favorite store is the Lighting Showcase on Rt. 9 in Shrewsbury, MA.  Tell Al and Juliana you were referred by Evergreen Realty.

Greening Your Kitchen and Keeping Your Family Safe

Whip up a batch of homemade vinegar solution to cheaply and effectively green clean your kitchen countertops without harsh chemicals.

From meat juices to milk spills, kitchen countertops can be messy places. But you don’t need to reach for caustic cleaners to get your kitchen countertops sparkling clean. You can make your own green cleaners using items in your pantry for a fraction of the price.

Kill germs with vinegar

Household vinegar contains acetic acid, a powerful antimicrobial that kills salmonella and E. coli bacteria. Readily available and cheap to boot, vinegar solutions in the proper proportions are a safe and effective alternative to harsh commercial cleaners.

Whip up your own non-toxic cleaner

To make your own non-toxic kitchen countertop cleaner, combine equal parts vinegar and tap water. To boost its cleaning power, warm it in a glass bowl in the microwave. A 64-ounce bottle of food-grade vinegar costs about $4, so a 32-ounce batch of homemade kitchen countertop cleaner will only set you back a buck.

In contrast, a 32-ounce bottle of commercial green cleaner like Seventh Generation costs about $5, while the same size conventional cleaner costs about $4.50.

Avoid these products

Some commercial anti-microbial wipes and sprays contain sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or ammonium chlorides, chemicals the EPA lists as hazardous to our (and our pets’) health. When mixed with other cleaning products, some of those chemicals can even release toxic gases.

Alyson McNutt English has written about the joy of green cleaning for publications like Pregnancy, Conceive, and BobVila.com. She buys her baking soda and vinegar in bulk and uses them liberally for everything from disinfecting laundry to soaking up her kids’ food stains.

Meadowbrook Orchard is a Local Treasure

It is a very snowy day today in Sterling, and we are looking at drifts of plowed snow from 6 to 20 feet high.  This might become the snowiest winter on record…February 2 and more snow to come.  The groundhog says spring will be here soon–I don’t know if I believe that!

There is something warm and comforting in remembering that soon we will feel the sun again, and be able to enjoy the outdoor experience of one of Sterling‘s local treasures, Meadowbrook Orchards.

David Chandler created a wonderful dining experience when he opened his recently moved restaurant on Chace Hill Road in Sterling.  Overlooking sweeping eastern views of the orchards, this restaurant offers wonderful home-made soups, fresh home-made breads and pastries, great sandwiches and salads and seasonal fruit from the orchard.  Breakfast faire is available during the week, but on the weekend, sometimes it is standing room only for the amazing breakfast specials; home-made French toast with fruits, scrumptious Belgium waffles, delicious omelets, all the Green Mountain coffee and custom tea you can drink.

Meadowbrook Orchard is FAMOUS for their “Mile High Apple Pie” and I always order my Thanksgiving pies ahead of time.  You can also buy many delicious kinds of pies to take home and cook yourself.

In the winter the wood stove offers a comfy gathering place for meeting friends for a quick snack.  You can stay warm and watch the snow falling over the orchard.

In the summer, you can have your meal under the umbrella on the patio with stunning views of the orchard.  There is a play area and jungle gym for the kids to have fun while the parents enjoy an extra cup of coffee.  After you eat, you can go pick outstanding, plump  blueberries or speciality apples.   If you don’t want to pick, you can buy your fruit.

On Thursday nights in the summer Dave does his famous barbecue rub–truly an anticipated local favorite event.  Discover this local treasure and bring friends who visit Sterling.  It is well worth the trip.

Crystal Brook Farm in Sterling MA

Sterling is blessed with some wonderful farms and we are grateful they keep Sterling’s foot in the agricultural arena.  Not only does this provide beautiful views of apple orchards, luscious fruits and vegetables, cows and goats, but our local Farmer’s Market allows our farmers an opportunity to sell their goods locally.

Rounding the bend on Tuttle Road to see the waving fields of hay, a big red barn, and a lovely antique white farmhouse, you know you have found the perfect setting….home to Crystal Brook Farm

When my grandchildren came this summer, we went to the farm to buy their herbs de province goat’s cheese, my very favorite.  The children wanted to see the baby goats, so we went to visit them in the fenced yard.  When they saw us coming, the baby goats pushed open the unlocked gate and raced around the fields.  Needless to say, we were not very effective catching the babies.  Fortunately, Eric Starbard, owner of Crystal Brook Farm came to the rescue

Eric and Ann Starbard have worked hard to make their farm produce some of the finest goats’ cheese to be found anywhere, and Ann has been travelling to learn even more.  She travelled to Seattle to the American Cheese Society Conference to glean ideas about how to make the best cheese.  Then she traveled to France to assist on their farms and learn their special skills about French cheese making.  Ann talks about her vision of the perfect cheese….I can’t wait to try it.  I know it will be extraordinary!  Visit Crystal Brook Farm on Tuttle Road and experience this local treasure yourself.
